While visiting the San Diego area, we made a quick stop in La Jolla for a day. This beachside city is quintessential SoCal, from the awesome beaches, food and places to explore. Our first stop in La Jolla was to the beaches to see the seals.
Parking is a bit tough due to the high tourist traffic and limited number of spaces around the small city. We circled the beachside neighborhoods a couple of times and finally ended up with an awesome spot at Rocky Point, just South of La Jolla Cove. You can see our little white Jeep rental in the photo above.
Jake was obviously super happy to be woken up from his nap to do a little adventuring in La Jolla. Little did he know, he would end up loving all the things to see and do here.
There are some seriously cool trees along the coast at Rocky Point. There is a paved sidewalk that runs along the coast for a good couple miles and can easily be accessed with a stroller.
As you can see, the paved sidewalk offers extremely expansive views. It really was not that busy on the day we visited and we loved strolling along the coast looking for the seals.

Our first sighting of the famous La Jolla Seals!

La Jolla Cove in all of its glory. It was warm out but not super hot. I did go down and feel the water, which was freezing and yes, these people were swimming side-by-side with seals. Fortunately, there are on-duty lifeguards here during the day in a small building just out of view of this photo to the left.
Super cool abandoned house pictured above. This place has to offer some amazing ocean views, how is it even possible that a place this cool looking in a place like La Jolla is still abandoned??? Oh did I mention its on Coast Blvd, the most sought after street in La Jolla and literally above La Jolla Cove?
Another view from farther North of La Jolla Cove and some of the seals taking a nap as tourists snap some photos.
Jake pointing down at the seals at La Jolla Cove, they were definitely one of his favorite things about La Jolla.

Seals! There were a ton of seals as we made your way along the beaches. The smell of the seals is overpowering but being able to get so close to so many wild seals, is an awesome opportunity. Just make sure not to let the kids or yourself get too close, they do bite.
I was able to get pretty close to these two seals as they played with each other. For this photo I used my Nikon D750 with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens.
Some of the seals chose to hang out along some of the bigger rocks, you can also see several kayak anglers off in the distance on the water.
This photo above will give you a good idea of how close people were actually willing to get to the seals. While we were there, the seals were mostly inactive and in nap-time mode, so there really wasn't much worry about getting up close to them.
We loved checking out the seals in La Jolla and we highly recommend stopping in La Jolla with the family if you are ever in the San Diego area. While walking along the sidewalk, we came to our next Fun Family Adventure at this amazing little general store known as the The Cave Store, which contains the incredible Sunny Jim Sea Cave. Check out our next post for that adventure.
