Whenever Mel, Jake and I hit the road for a fun family adventure, I always try to find some 4x4 roads to take our Ford F150 XLT 5.4L 4x4 on. Months before our two-week road trip up to Nantucket, I had already purchased a beach permit for the island, which prompted me to begin my search for the best driveable beach on the island.
The Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge is without a doubt the best place to explore what is left of the original untouched Nantucket wilderness. Comprised of two long peninsulas, the refuge's 16 miles of trails, are best accessed by boat or a vehicle with 4x4 capabilities. If you've never driven on sand or off-road before, your best bet is to stick on the main stretch of beach headed out to the Great Point Lighthouse.
Plenty of Jeep Wranglers and 4x4 trucks can be spotted cruising by out here, Jake really liked that most of the Jeep's were painted red. Well actually just about every Jeep on Nantucket is red. Along the way we noticed ample spots to park and setup camp for the day. For more info about Coskata and Coatue visit www.thetrustees.org.
